This article was originally published in Showsight Magazine, May 2014 issue. The Pumi is one of three Hungarian herding breeds, all of similar origin, representing regional variations within Hungary. The Puli originated in the eastern plains, the Mudi in the southern plains, and the Pumi in the hilly Transdanubian region of western Hungary. These breeds are so closely related that even today Pumi-appearing puppies can be born in Puli litters, and Mudi-appearing puppies could be born in Pumi litters. Understanding the close relationship between these breeds will assist a judge in their prioritization of dogs when judging each of these breeds. The three breeds vary the most in coat type, ear shape, and tails. The body types are quite similar, all calling for a square, light-bodied dog.

The true popularity of the breed came about during the 1860s when Queen Victoria visited the Scottish Highlands and fell in love with the breed. From that point on, Collies became very fashionable. The Collie’s character has been further romanticized and portrayed as the ideal family companion by such authors as Albert Payson Terhune (Lad of Sunnybank), Eric Knight (Lassie Come-Home), and in the 1950s television series “Lassie.” The working Collie of the 1800s evolved into the “show” Collie that we know today.

Dogs are more massive throughout. Bitches should not be faulted for being somewhat smaller in dimensions while maintaining a proportionally powerful structure. A good evaluation considers positive qualities of type and soundness with equal weight. The height of the dog should come from the depth of body rather than from the length of leg. Proportion is rectangular, the length of the dog from the forechest to the rump is somewhat longer than the height at the withers. As the name Mastiff denotes, the dog should be massive and heavy-boned, with a powerful structure. Great depth and breadth is desirable.

The modern-day Bluetick Coonhound traces its origins to an importation of Grand Bleu de Gascognes from the Marquis de Lafayette to George Washington in 1785. These French Hounds were crossed with Washington’s hounds, which descended from hounds brought to America in 1650 by Robert Brooke. One Grand Bleu owned by George Washington was recorded as giving birth to 15 puppies, and Washington likened their musical voices to the “bells of Moscow.” The Grand Bleu was too slow on the trail to please the American hunter, but when bred to American hounds, it increased their cold-trailing ability and endurance. At the beginning of the 20th century, all hounds of Bluetick, Redtick, and Walker type were lumped into a group known as English Coonhounds. It is thought this was because they still resembled their heavy-boned English ancestors and were recognized by UKC as one breed, English Fox and Coon Hounds.

Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens: These wire-coated hounds with a long name are not only charming and rustic all over, they are also part of a long history of hounds and hunting in their native France. The breed has been around for an unknown amount of time, as records have not been clearly kept, but these hounds certainly date back to at least the late Middle Ages. It is important to understand that there are four distinct breeds of Griffon Vendeen hounds—of varying size and balance—all to represent the most important aspect of distinction between them; function in the field. All four are now bred as individual breeds and are recognized as such by FCI. However, you will only find the two Basset Griffon Vendeens in the show ring in the United States.

On that date, the breed became eligible to compete at AKC shows in the regular classes. Like most breeds achieving full recognition, there was a rush to show our dogs and to compete in the big ring. It didn’t take long before we had our first majors, our first conformation champion, and some very nice group placements for the breed. With a whole nine months of ring experience under our belts, it is time to look at where the breed has been and where it needs to go.
