SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) – If you’re reading this, then there is no doubt you might be headed to the beach this summer, but you’ll need to grab a bottle of sunscreen.
As you choose from the wide variety on store shelves, make sure to grab the right type for your skin.
“For sun protection. You want both UVA and UVB protection. UVA protection is especially important for everybody no matter what their skin type because it is the one that causes our skin to darken and can increase the risk of skin cancer.” Said Dermatologist Dr. Josephine M. Futrell, MD, PhD, at ARKLATEX Dermatology.
“UVB gives us the tan but can also give us sunburns, particularly in lighter-skinned individuals,” said Dr. Futrell, MD, PhD; if you are using a spray sunscreen, make sure you apply it in a ventilated area and do two or three passes until you have a good, shiny coat, if you are sweating, that sunscreen is gone in 60 to 90 minutes, it must be reapplied. I have so many people say I’m not in the sun, but every time you climb in your car, if it’s daylight hours, you are getting ultraviolet light through your car window,” said Dr. Futrell, MD, PhD,
Dr. Futrell, MD, PhD, recommends that everyone older than six months wear at least an SPF of 30 when outside. Sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
“If you have skin sensitivity, the physical sunscreens, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide are probably going to be best for you. But don’t forget… Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours.
“It is important to wear it, particularly on your face 365 days a year,” said Dr. Josephine M. Futrell, MD, PhD
