    What can you do to avoid getting Alzheimer’s?

    SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) — June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month , and it’s important to know the signs of the disease and how to take charge of your brain health.

    According to Alzheimer’s Association, there are nearly 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. The lifetime risk for the disease at age 45 is 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 10 for men.

    Alzheimer’s Association says early detection of Alzheimer’s, or another dementia has significant benefits for the person diagnosed and their loved ones, including greater access to treatment options and the ability to plan for the future.

    Many of us have been affected by this brain disorder, whether it be someone close to us or someone we know. But do you know how to spot Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

    10 Early Signs and Symptoms:

    1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
    2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
    3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
    4. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
    5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
    6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
    7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
    8. Decreased or poor judgment
    9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
    10. Changes in mood and personality

    Alzheimer’s Association says adopting healthy habits may help reduce the risk of dementia.

    “We want to encourage everyone to engage in taking charge of their brain health and there’s many ways you can do that. One of the main things is eating well, trying to eat the right foods, getting enough sleep, get moving, exercise. It is never too late to start any of these things,” says Shannon Trest, Manager for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Texarkana.
