SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) –  Hurricane Beryl reached category 5 before making three different landfalls and will continue to bring heavy rainfall to the Great Lakes. The landfalls occurred in Grenada, Mexico, and the United States.

Beryl produced the strongest hurricane winds on record before August of any given year since the Atlantic hurricane database began in 1851. It also formed at a point further east than any Atlantic hurricane that has formed since 1933.

    Most tornadoes in one day

The most tornadoes ever recorded in one day was during the 2011 super outbreak from Apr. 25-28, when 360 tornadoes were recorded across central Mississippi and west-central Kentucky.

216 of those tornadoes occurred from midnight to midnight on Apr. 27.

Another famous super-outbreak of tornadoes occurred on Apr. 3, 1974, focusing on Xenia, Ohio. Thirty-three people were killed and there was more than $100 million in damages as 148 tornadoes spread across 13 states.

    Hurricane Beryl’s tornado outbreak

Hurricane Beryl has been a tornado-producing machine of a storm, with the National Weather Service issuing 113 tornado warnings on July 8.

The storm caused the NWS in Shreveport to issue more tornado warnings than they have ever issued in one day. Ever .

The new record more than doubled the old, and the 2024 hurricane season has barely begun.

Before Beryl’s arrival, the highest number of tornado warnings in a single day in the United States in July was 67. Not counting any other NWS offices, the NWS office in Shreveport issued 67 tornado warnings as Beryl crept through the ArkLaTex. It appears so far that the number of tornado warnings issued for the region around Shreveport accounted for more than half of Beryl-caused tornado warnings in the United States on Monday.

The 67 tornado warnings issued by the NWS office in Shreveport during Hurricane Beryl is the new record for the Shreveport office.

The National Weather Service has started surveying the damage from Monday’s storm. The final count of just how many tornadoes touched down in the ArkLaTex will not be known until this weekend.

But it’s important to remember that just because a tornado warning is issued doesn’t mean that there is a tornado on the ground. And warnings are not sent out for more than 30% of tornadoes.

    Beryl deaths

At least seven people have died in the United States since Beryl made landfall in Texas. Eight people died in Mexico because of Beryl, and at least two people were killed in Grenada.
