A major technology outage grounded flights, hampered public transit systems and disrupted operations at banks and hospitals around the globe Friday in an incident a cybersecurity firm blamed on a faulty system update.

CrowdStrike, a U.S. firm that advertises being used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System, adding the incident was "not a security incident or cyberattack."

"The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," said a statement from CrowdStrike. The company's CEO, George Kurtz, apologized for the disruptions in an interview with NBC's Today. Microsoft, meanwhile, said "the underlying cause has been fixed," but residual impacts will affect some of its Microsoft 365 apps and services.

In the U.S., hundreds of flights were canceled Friday morning. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were among those who grounded flights less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved a cloud-services-related outage that impacted several low-cost carriers.

The outage impacted some travelers flying into and out of Shreveport Regional Airport.

Shreveport Airport Authority Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Mark Crawford said, "as always, check with your airline for the latest flight status updates."

Flight impacted by the outage? Here's how airlines are responding

    United Airlines

A statement on United's website stated:

"A third-party software outage impacted computer systems worldwide, including at United. We are resuming some flights but expect schedule disruptions to continue throughout Friday. We have issued a waiver to make it easier for customers to change their travel plans via united.com or the United app."

    American Airlines

American Airlines is also offering travel waivers. According to it's website flights have resumed and the company is "working diligently to minimize disruptions."

You can change your trip online or in the American app.

    Delta Airlines

Delta's website says customers can continue to manage their itinerary on delta.com and the Fly Delta app, but may experience "slowness and performance disruptions due to high volume of customer requests."

The airline has also paused unaccompanied minor travel until Sunday, July 21. Those already booked will not be able to travel.

    Allegiant Airlines

As of publication, Allegiant's website was down.

Crawford said Allegiant's system is still down and it is unclear at this time if flights will operate today.
