Haughton’s Kayleigh Goss garnered enough votes this week to win the fifth annual Shreveport Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission and Silmon and Cosse Orthodontics.

A standout softball player for the Lady Buccaneers, Goss becomes the third Haughton athlete to win in the non-football poll for the 2023-24 school year. She joins previous winners that include Benton’s Claire Allen and Brody Hutchison, along with Caddo Magnet’s Elena Pizarro and Calvary’s Jackson Burney.

Goss and her supporters accumulated 36,771 votes, a solid 40% of the 91,642 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Goss to top a field of 14 additional candidates, including Caddo Magnet tennis standout Phoebe Voumard, who finished in second place with and impressive 19,523 votes (21%).

Goss will receive a duffle bag, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s.

“Kayleigh Goss has played a pivotal role in the success of Haughton’s program this year,” said Haughton coach Carissa Herndon Peters. “She has the capability to small ball, soft slap and power slap, making it difficult for teams to get her out. In previous seasons, she’s served as an outfielder.”

Goss is currently hitting .511 on the season with 48 hits and 18 stolen bases.

“While she is lethal in the outfield with speed, she’s had to serve a different role defensively as our varsity catcher this year, allowing only 12 passed balls all season,” Peters said. “Mentally and physically, Goss has matured and stepped up as a leader and blossomed in her roles. I have no doubt she will be successful and represent Haughton well as she continues her softball career at BPCC.”

Others on the 30th ballot of the school year were Raegan Henderson, North DeSoto softball; Elena Heng, Airline softball; Kourtney Sepulvado, Zwolle softball; Kyra Richmond, Huntington softball; Landon Smith, Calvary baseball; David Griep, Ruston baseball; Tanner Webb, Benton baseball; Wyatt Ditt, Byrd track; Devon Oliver, Parkway track; Avante Curry, North Webster track; Myles Carpenter, Cedar Creek track; Tomarcus Keith, Northwood powerlifting and Connor Cassano, Loyola golf.

They were chosen because of their performance the previous week or because their names were submitted by their coach. The Times poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football.

The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
