NSU will introduce Genovese Tuesday
Northwestern State University will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 ,to introduce James. T. Genovese as the university’s 21st president. The event will be in the Sylvan Friedman Student Union Ballroom. All in the community are invited. Genovese, who has served as an associate justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court, was named the university’s president July 18 and will assume office in August. Tuesday’s program will include recognition of local and regional elected officials, figures from Genovese’s personal life, special presentations to the newly elected president and comments from Genovese.

The Magnolia School District is reminding the public that a new district-wide cell phone policy takes effect this school year, which begins Thursday, July 25, 2024. No student will be allowed to possess on his or her person any cell phone, smartwatch, or similar electronic communication device, camera, MP3 player, iPod, or other portable music device during school hours.
Lifelong Natchitoches resident celebrates 100th birthday
Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday for lifelong Natchitoches resident Laura Lavespere Saturday on July 20. She’s lived in the City of Lights since she was a teenager. She worked for years at Northwestern State University as a controller for approximately 30 years. She later worked at Gwen’s Ladies Wear until she retired to babysit her only granddaughter. She was married to Eugene Lavespere Sr. until his death in 1998. She has one son, Eugene Lavespere Jr.
