2024 Arizona football season countdown: 39 days to kickoff
A LOOK BACK — NO. 39 PETE RUSSELL. With it being the 39th day until kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 39 for Arizona is fullback/tight end Pete Russell, who played with the Wildcats in 1988 and 1989 after playing at San Francisco City Community College. He became an Arizona assistant and NFL scout. Russell was an NFL scout for almost 20 years. He is listed in the Ourlads.com Scout Hall of Fame. He is retired living in the Bay area and is an active Arizona alum supporting the program and attending games.
Tempe man, clinic linked to $85.6M in fraud schemes
A local man and an unrelated Tempe clinic are the focus of separate state and federal cases alleging over $85.6 million in Medicaid and Medicare fraud. A federal indictment accuses Adam Mutwol, 45, of Tempe, of conspiring with Gilbert Nurse practitioner Daud Koloesho, 44, to illegally bill the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and American Indian Health Program (AIHP) for substance abuse treatments that earned them over $51.6 million in illicit payments.
FC Tucson to play Friday in USL League 2 Western Conference Finals at Peoria, Ill.
FC Tucson (9-2-5) will face Project 51O (9-4-1) in Peoria, Ill,, on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Project 51O is based in Oakland, Calif. Ventura County, who finished with an 11-1-2 record in the regular season, won the division comfortably, but FC Tucson were the only team to take points off of them twice. Those two previous meetings ended with a 0-0 draw at Kino North Stadium, and a 2-1 FC Tucson win at Ventura’s home ground.

Arizona tribes show support for San Carlos Apache amid wildfire
SAN CARLOS, Ariz. — Several Arizona tribes have extended support to the San Carlos Apache Tribe following a devastating wildfire that broke out July 11. The Watch Fire destroyed 13 homes and burned over 1,110 acres, leaving 75 people homeless and forcing the evacuation of more than 400 residents, according to the San Carlos Apache Tribe. The fire is the most serious structural blaze the area has seen in at least 30 years.
