    In a statement first reported by the Today show on Monday, Aug. 19, Donahue's family said the groundbreaking TV talk show journalist died in his home surrounded by his family including his wife of 44 years, he "passed away peacefully following a long illness."

    According to reports Phil Donahue died Sunday night after the completion of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Marlo Thomas, Donahue's wife is the daughter of the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who founded the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in 1962.
