SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — With President Joe Biden exiting the race, voters now may be wondering what’s next for the democratic candidacy.

“Historically, it’s unusual in American politics for a president to drop out the race this late in the election cycle,” John Brown University political science professor Daniel Bennett said.

This is the first time in nearly 60 years that a president running for re-election has ended their campaign.

“Given the craziness of the 2024 campaign already, I shouldn’t have discounted anything, including something as unusual and historically unprecedented as this,” Bennett said.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced on X that he would suspend his re-election campaign.

“I think overall there’s a sense of relief among some democrats, probably some sadness for democrats who were hoping for a second Biden term, but now the party can get to work on deciding where they go from here,” Bennett said.

Bennett then said the big question would be who replaces Biden on the Democratic ticket.

Pretty soon after he made his announcement, Biden issued a statement where he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

“That’s probably the most likely scenario at this point,” Bennett.

The unanswered questions that remain will likely be answered at the Democratic National Convention in August.
