Tornado touches down in western New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. ( WIVB ) – The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down near Silver Creek, New York, just after noon Wednesday and moved along a northeast path near Eden and East Aurora as the remnant storms from Hurricane Beryl hit the region.

Several towns in southern Erie County sustained damage in the storm, and Eden was placed under a State of Emergency . In Arkwright, a dramatic video showed the roof of a house being ripped off and thrown across the yard.

More than 25,000 power outages were reported in Erie County at the height of the storms just after 1 p.m., but that number was down to a few thousand by Wednesday evening.

Most of Western New York was removed from a Tornado Watch just before 5 p.m., though it remained in Allegany County until 9 p.m. Warren, McKean and Potter counties in Pennsylvania also remained under a watch Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service has not yet released info on the severity of Wednesday’s tornado. It was believed to be the first tornado to hit Western New York since an EF-2 touched down in Wyoming County in 2022.
