It's no secret to Montgomery County residents, but Fortune made it official, naming Silver Spring the "best place to live for families" in a newly released ranking after landing third last year.

"This impressive accolade reflects to what many of us already know - we are committed to fostering a community that supports families in every way possible," Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich wrote in a lengthy statement. "Silver Spring's top ranking as a family-friendly home speaks volumes about the quality of life we offer."

The ranking was based on five main themes: education, resources for aging adults, general wellness, financial health, and livability.

"This ranking focused on the best places for families, many of whom are shouldering the responsibilities of raising their own children while caring for aging parents," researchers said.

"Our team gave special consideration to resources for aging adults, livability, and wellness, accounting for the importance of residents’ well-being, the number of quality nursing homes in an area, the number of mental health providers, the safety of a town, as well as its racial and ethnic diversity."

Fortune highlighted the suburb's proximity to the nation's capital, which is just a quick commute away, as well as it's Arts and Entertainment District, which the outlet says sets it apart from other similar communities.

"Residents can watch an independent film at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center or see an artist perform live at the Fillmore, an iconic music venue that’s hosted everyone from Aretha Franklin to Janis Joplin," they wrote."Colorful murals and vibrant community centers help bring the area to life."

According to Fortune, the median sale price for single-family homes in Silver Spring is slightly above $650,000, with a median household income of $106,000. The community also features a diverse cast of residents and a high percentage of high school graduation rates.

"The area is rich in diversity: The probability that two people chosen at random will be a different race or ethnicity from each other is 73 percent per the US Census, researchers noted, adding that Silver Spring has the highest "Community Well-Being Index score from Sharecare - which analyzes over 600 health risk factors in communities across the country - on the list at 85 out of 100.

Elrich cited many of the things Fortune highlighted in his lengthy statement, partiularly focusing on Silver Spring's diversity.

"This cultural richness fosters a sense of understanding and respect among residents," he said. "In Silver Spring, children grow up learning to appreciate and celebrate differences, preparing them to become global citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.

"Fortune's designation of Silver Spring as the number one 'Best Place To Live For Families' is a testament to the collective efforts of our residents, schools, and local government.

"It highlight Silver Spring's commitment to creating a supportive, inclusive, and thriving community."
