Portland Metro Area Under Heat Advisory and Critical Fire Watch as Temperatures Soar
Portland residents are bracing for a sweltering day as the National Weather Service's heat advisory remains firmly in place until 11 PM PDT this evening. The cities and surrounding regions are warned to anticipate afternoon high temperatures in the middle to upper 90s, with the advisory highlighting inner Portland Metro, East Portland Metro, and East Central Willamette Valley, among others. Public health officials recommend that the populace stay hydrated, find respite in cooled spaces, and don protective lightweight clothing to fend off the scorching heat.

Kale Jensen has “leapt” into the Siuslaw High School record book. The incoming Viking Junior competed at a recent “all-comers” meet in Eugene. Competing in the high jump he cleared six feet, two inches, putting him into a 5-way tie for ninth place in that category. His mark is also the 2nd highest recorded in the 21st century for Siuslaw according to athletic director Chris Johnson. Bryce Siegel cleared six-four in 2007. The school record is held by Siuslaw Hall of Fame member and current building contractor Mike Roe. He jumped six feet ten inches in 1979. Roe’s mark is also the state record in the 4A classification.
OHSU’s postdoc researchers reach impasse
A unit of about 250 postdoctoral researchers represented by Oregon AFSCME on July 11 announced an impasse in bargaining over a first contract with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). The two sides have been negotiating since September 2023. OHSU has refused to offer raises of any amount, saying that the researchers already paid according to a federal formula for projects funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health. Once the two sides submitted formal final offers on July 12, a 30-day cooling off period began. After that, under Oregon’s public employee collective bargaining law, the postdoctoral researchers could strike.
Developers’ deteriorating property attracts city’s attention
A Portland-area development company has run afoul of city code enforcement for letting a century-old commercial building in Sellwood-Moreland fall into disrepair. Portland Permitting & Development ordered the sidewalk closed at Southeast 13th Avenue and Tenino Street in a posted notice dated June 26. The notice cites “damaged and deteriorated siding, trim, fascia and parapet. Fall hazard risk at sidewalks.”
