The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has charged two individuals after a two-year-old died from a gunshot wound.

According to an email from Lt. Ryan Flood with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Deylakotia Simon Burgess, 32, and Willie Tyron Burgess Jr., 50, both of Simpsonville, were charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk.

The arrest came after Deylakotia's two-year-old son died at Hillcrest Hospital from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

According to Flood, investigators believe the child obtained the firearm while at the home located at Ballantyne Commons Apartments, where he accidentally shot himself.

According to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, the child died at 7:51 p.m. Monday. Deputies arrived at the hospital shortly after around 8:25 p.m.
