Western Iowa Tech holds culinary camp for middle schoolers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Western Iowa Tech Community College is holding a culinary camp to teach middle schoolers how to cook.

Students are learning how to make boba tea, high-protein smoothies, melon baskets, pizzas from scratch, and skillet cookies with homemade chocolate chips and ice cream. With the basics of culinary safety, food preparation, knife skills, and kid-friendly recipes, they are able to create dishes beyond their imagination.

“We do this for kids so that way they have experience with their cooking,” culinary adjunct Alexli Rocha said. “They can come in and enjoy cooking, and we try to make it fun for them so then that way they can go home and say ‘hey, let me cook tonight’ or ‘this is what I learned.’ Then that way, they can do it at home too.”

The kids told KCAU 9 that they are enjoying the learning experience and are excited to show their parents how to make fresh dough.

“I love cooking at my house,” student Tessa Boettcher said. “I cook pancakes a lot and just a bunch of other stuff and I love doing it, and my brother did it last year, so I thought, why not try it out? It’s really fun.”

While you might have missed the camp this summer, you can sign up your child for next year for $75.
