SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Many Sioux City residents woke up Tuesday morning to power outages and quite a bit of debris from the overnight storm.

In parts of town, downed branches blocked roads. First responders were already out overnight working to get things cleaned up, but some streets and yards are still a mess. If driving, there may still be debris on the road, so take it slow and keep your eyes open to avoid hitting something that could damage your vehicle.

The storms also caused a few power outages across Siouxland. As of Tuesday at 11:18 a.m., the MidAmerican Outage Map showed more than 1000 customers in the Sioux City Metro Area with outages with more than 800 of those customers in Sioux City. At 2 a.m. there wer more than 9,000 customers impacted. That number started going back down by around 3 a.m.

Sioux City first responders and power crews were kept busy with calls of downed wires, blown transformers, and even a gas leak during the storm and in the hours immediately after.

If you ever see a downed wire, there’s some important things to keep in mind. First, stay away from the line, anything touching it, and any nearby water. You can’t always tell if a line is live just by looking at it. If you’re near a downed line, don’t run. Shuffle away from it, keeping your feet on the ground.

As soon as you’re in a safe location, call 911 and then report the downed line to the local power company. The number to call for MidAmerican Energy is (800) 799-4443.
