Tyler Diamond (145.4) vs. Brett Johns (145.6)

Round 1

A regular-season clash pitting Diamond (13-3, 2-2 PFL) against Johns (20-4, 1-1 PFL) in the featherweight division kicks off festivities inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Neither man has scored a point in the 145-pound standings, making a quick finish paramount in terms of their playoff hopes. Diamond, 33, has rattled off four victories in six appearances, while the 32-year-old Johns has won three of his past four fights. Bobby Wombacher steps in as the third man in the cage. Customary glove tap gets us started. They exchange in the center, with Johns firing a leg kick behind a left hook to the body. The Welshman shoots on a takedown, but Diamond reverses immediately and scrambles on top as they somersault into the cage. Diamond takes top control and unleashes a few punches to the head. Not where Johns wants to be. Diamond continues to control the hips and seatbelts one of Johns’ arms behind him. The Californian scores with moderate ground-and-pound but has yet to solve the Johns guard. Two minutes to go, and Diamond has seized the reins for the time being. They trade punches. Diamond looks to pass but fails to break through his opponent’s butterfly guard. He elects instead to hurl punches at the body. Johns gets back to his feet with roughly 70 seconds to go. The round appears lost for the Welshman, unless he can land something cataclysmic. A body lock takedown from Johns sets of a scramble. He threatens Diamond’s neck with a guillotine with half a minute left on the clock. Diamond gets back to his feet, and they trade to close the period.

Round 2

Johns heads into Round 2 with some work to do. Diamond doubles up on his jab and eats a leg kick. They clinch, and Johns bullies the American into the fence. A brief stalemate ensues. Johns dumps Diamond to the canvas, but cannot keep him there. Diamond pops right back to his feet and cuts off the Welshman with a whizzer. Johns trips Diamond to the floor and immediately moves to the back, threading one hook but not a second. Diamond gets back to his feet. Johns executes another takedown and controls the legs. Midway through the middle stanza, the momentum has shifted. Another takedown from Johns. Diamond looks winded and somewhat discouraged. Johns postures up and grinds his shoulder into the Californian’s face. Diamond seems to have conceded bottom position, making few moves to stand. With a minute to go, Johns in control. He grinds down on Diamond with short punches and settles in half guard. He moves to full mount, then takes the back with both hooks. Diamond survives, but the optics heading into the final round are not good.

Round 3

They enter the last round with the outcome hanging in the balance. They clinch in the center. Johns shoots on a takedown but winds up pinned underneath his opponent. Diamond’s window of opportunity opens. However, Johns scrambles to his feet, frees himself and exchanges in the center of the cage. Diamond gets the better of it. He fires shots to the body from both hands, as they tie up along the fence. Diamond clips Johns with two short left hooks on the exit, and they float to the center to dirty box. Johns executes a takedown but fails to corral the American. Diamond finds his way into top position, dodges a triangle and sets up in full guard. Two minutes to go, and Johns chances appear to be dwindling. Diamond feeds the Welshman short punches, controls his hips and cuts off avenues of escape. Time becoming an issue for Johns. Diamond avoids another attempted triangle and stays busy with his ground-and-pound. Johns boxes the ears from the bottom. Diamond postures and fires a series of shots to the body and head to polish off a likely decision victory.

Round 1

Action moves to the welterweight division, where Madge (11-4-1, 2-1 PFL) awaits Gracie (12-5, 0-1 PFL) in a regular-season battle at 170 pounds. The 33-year-old Madge holds an 8-1 record across his last nine assignments. Jason Herzog administers the law and order. Gracie takes the center, shoots a kick to the midsection and grabs a single-leg. He finishes the takedown, and they wind up in dueling heel hook position. Gracie advances to the top and moves to side control. Gracie feeds him punches in his search for openings. Madge defending well thus far. The South African escapes to his feet. Gracie clinches immediately. Madge separates and circles on the perimeter. Gracie effectively crowding him on the feet, and they clinch along the fence. Gracie works for another single-leg, shoots some knees to the thigh and then bails on the takedown attempt. They stall in the over-under position against the cage. Gracie breaks free, fires a kick to the body and connects with an overhand right. Madge answers with a check left hook but concedes a takedown and winds up on his back with a little more than a minute to go. Gracie applies crushing pressure from the top, operates from half guard and hovers above his counterpart. Standing-to-ground punches follow, and Gracie makes a pass at a kneebar in the closing seconds.

Round 2

Madge needs to hit the reset button here. Gracie greets him in the center of the cage, and they hurl hooks at one another. Madge flicks out his jab and clips the Brazilian with a right hook. A left hook to the body connects for Madge. Gracie circles on the outside, bobs, weaves and ducks into a right hand. He executes a takedown without much resistance, foils a guillotine attempt from Madge and nearly climbs to full mount. It goes without saying Madge does not want to be on his back here. Gracie operates from half guard, then postures and lands a few standing-to-ground punches. He dives back into half guard, taking his time in a hunt for the finish. Gracie floats above Madge, catches his breath and gets back to work from half guard. He scores with hammerfists behind the ear. Madge scrambles to his feet and dumps Gracie to the floor. He gets busy with ground-and-pound but fails to control Gracie, who flirts with an inverted triangle and settles for a tie up to close the round.

Round 3

Madge probably needs a finish as the final round starts. Gracie gives ground, assesses the situation, eats a few punches and probes with his jab. Madge connects upstairs. Fatigue may be an issue for the Brazilian down the stretch. He delivers a takedown and settles in half guard, but replays show an illegal knee to the groin just before the trip. A brief pause to the action results. They restart on the feet. Gracie retreats, then clinches and scoops up the South African with another takedown. He bites down on the neck, bails on a choke attempt and takes top position behind hammerfists. Gracie dodges a few upkicks and settles in full guard. He passes to half guard, maintains shoulder pressure and hammers the side of the head with palm strikes. Time running out for Madge. He scrambles onto all fours and captures one of Gracie’s legs but goes nowhere fast. Gracie widens his base and scores with hammerfists. Madge gets back to his feet, but Gracie scrambles behind him and drags him back to the canvas. Fifty seconds to go. Gracie once again operates from half guard, as Herzog urges action. Looks like Gracie is going to win this one on points.

Round 1

Attention shifts back to the 145-pound weight class, as Kamaka (13-5-1, 1-0 PFL) locks horns with Carvalho (13-9, 0-1 PFL) in a regular-season featherweight tilt. Kamaka has tallied three points in the standings, while Carvalho has yet to dent the scoreboard. Carvalho, 29, enters the cage on a three-fight losing streak and in search of his first win in nearly two years. Wombacher draws the officiating assignment. They greet one another with a glove tap. Carvalho probes with his jab and flicks out a one-two. Kamaka counters a head kick with a leg kick. The Hawaiian steps into an overhand right. Leg kick from Carvalho, who misfires with a right hook upstairs. Kamaka scores with a pair of right hands. Another low kick from Caravalho. Kamaka paws with his jab, snatches a collar tie and delivers a knee to the body. He follows with an inside leg kick. Neither man truly seizing the initiative yet. Carvalho steps into a left hook. Kamaka paws with his jab and receives a warning for extending his fingers. Carvalho connects with a leg kick. Kamaka answers in kind to the body. Left hook to the body followed by a left hook to the head from the Hawaiian. Nice combo there. Carvalho stays on the lead leg. Kamaka counters a leg kick with a stiff right hand to the head, forcing Carvalho to recalibrate. Another counter right hand from Kamaka. The Hawaiian follows a push kick to the body with a multi-punch volley.

Round 2

Carvalho gets busy with his jab right out of the gate. Kamaka answers with a digging knee to the body. He circles behind Carvalho and pushes him onto all fours. Kamaka stays on the body lock, but Carvalho works his way to the fence, builds a base from one knee and gets to his feet. Kamaka dumps him back to the mat. Carvalho stands, and they trade. Kamaka gets the better of the exchange. Multi-punch combos from both men. Kamaka gives Carvalho pause with a counter right hand. Carvalho alternating stances in an effort to throw the Hawaiian off his trail. No luck. Carvalho connects with a partially blocked kick to the head. Kamaka landing the more consequential blows. Carvalho lands a right hand but wanders into a clinch. Kamaka turns him into the fence, as they trade knees. He then targets the back of the thigh with knees. Carvalho attacks a guillotine but finds no such luck.

Round 3

Kamaka opens with a clean one-two. Carvalho answers with a leg kick. Kamaka commands the center, eats a body kick, paws with his jab and responds to a low kick with a three-punch volley to the head. He blocks a head kick from Carvalho. Kamaka scores with a kick to the body, then pressures his opponent backward. Kamaka counters jabs from Carvalho with a knee to the midsection. Carvalho punctuates a multi-strike flurry with an inside leg kick. Kamaka throws out a jab and follows it with an overhand left. Carvalho presses forward with punches from both hands, snatches a single-leg and then bails on the takedown attempt. He sets up shop in the clinch, works behind Kamaka and forces the Hawaiian to widen his base. They trade places with 90 seconds to go. Kamaka feeds Carvalho knees to the thigh and kicks the calf before they separate. Kamaka clings to a single-leg, temporarily exposing his neck. Carvalho hunts a guillotine, separates and delivers a kick the body, prompting the Hawaiian to retreat to his back. Carvalho closes with ground-and-pound.

Welterweights are next to the stage, where Yamauchi (29-6, 1-0 PFL) faces a fellow Bellator MMA veteran in Koreskhov (27-5, 0-1 PFL) at 170 pounds. Yamauchi has three points in the regular-season standings, while Koreshkov has not yet scored. Stein has more on Yamauchi and his “By Any Means Necessary” approach. Koreshkov, who fell short in his April 19 promotional debut, has never suffered back-to-back defeats in his 32-fight career. Wombacher answers the call to referee. Glove tap gets us going. Likely a great deal of mutual respect between these two. Yamauchi tests the waters with kicks to the head and lead leg. Koreshkov waffles his opponent with a body kick followed by a right hook, then invites him back to his feet. Yamauchi shoots on a takedown and scrambles behind the Alexander Shlemenko protégé. He chips away with knees to the thigh and shields his head from return fire. Action stalls. Koreshkov looking at Wombacher for a restart. Yamauchi drags Koreshkov onto one knee, then drags him to the mat from behind. Yamauchi sets both hooks, then secures his position with a body triangle. Still no damage exacted, though. Koreshkov playing it safe and wisely so against the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. A minute to go. Yamauchi works punches from behind, then goes to work on the choke. Koreshkov defends. Did Yamauchi do enough to steal the round?

Round 2

Koreshkov greets his counterpart with a leg kick and a stiff jab. Russian throwing heat early on. He connects with a Superman punch and presses forward before staggering him with a knee. He catches Yamauchi coming in with a crushing uppercut and drops him to his back. Heavy ground-and-pound follows. Koreshkov alternating between punches and hammerfists. Yamauchi hanging on somehow but probably could use a few ibuprofen at this point. Koreshkov rests, then gets back to throwing punches. Ugly round so far for Yamauchi. Koreshkov pairs stifling to control with intermittent punches, effectively neutralizing his opponent’s venomous guard. Yamauchi working to shrimp out of danger, but his adversary having none of it. Koreshkov stays on top, feeds him a left hand and pops the body with his right. Thirty seconds to go. Big round for Koreshkov.

Round 3

They touch gloves ahead of Round 3. An inside leg kick gets Koreshkov started. He steps into a glancing knee strike upstairs, keeps his jab in Yamauchi’s face and shuts down a takedown attempt. Another leg kick from Koreshkov, who then targets the calf. He narrowly misses a wheel kick. Yamauchi presses forward, shoots on the hips and dumps the Russian to the canvas with three minutes to go, landing in side control. Koreshkov reclaims half guard, as he eats a series of short punches. Yamauchi applies maximum pressure and grapevines the right leg. Koreshkov going nowhere fast and could be squandering all the good work he did in Round 2. Yamauchi climbs to full mount. With a minute to go, Yamauchi looks to hunting an arm-triangle. Koreshkov pushes off the fence, rolls into top position, avoids an armbar and feeds Yamauchi punches across the final 10 seconds.

The 28-year-old Khizriev (15-0, 1-0 PFL) has already banked three points in the regular-season standings, while Barzola remains scoreless. A recent subject of the Sherdog Prospect Watch series, Khizriev has gone the distance in 11 of his 15 bouts. Barzola has compiled a 4-3 record since parting aways with the UFC in 2021. Herzog once again steps in as the third man in the cage. No glove tap to open. Both men light on their feet at the start. Khizriev connects with a one-two and a front kick to the midsection. Barzola looks tentative here. Khizriev doubles up on the jab, feints a front kick and fires a leg kick. The American Top Team rep pesters Barzola with his jab. Khizriev hammers the calf with a kick, switches stances and delivers a push kick to the thigh. Barzola swings and misses. Khizriev sneaks in a right hand over the top, continues to command the center of the cage, nearly completes a takedown and resets on open space. Barzola blitzes but comes up empty. He drops Khizriev to a knee with a sneaky left hook but fails to follow it. The methodical Khizriev stays in his comfort zone in the center of the cage, popping his jab whenever the mood strikes. A check hook from the Russian clips Barzola, who tries to blink out the pain. The Peruvian steps into a right hand, then another. He looks to have the power advantage here. Barzola shoots on a takedown but thinks better of it.

Round 2

They meet in the middle, with Khizriev feinting a leg kick. Khizriev pairs his jab with hooks from both hands upstairs. The Russian’s jab appears to be the difference maker. Barzola trades left hooks with his opponents. A front kick to the body puts the Peruvian on the retreat. Khizriev marches forward and fires a left hook upstairs. Barzola on his heels now. Khizriev lands a one-two, drawing blood above the left eye. He connects again in combination, punctuating his efforts with a right hand. Barzola pawing at his eye, as he scrambles out of an attempted takedown from his adversary. Khizriev racking up the points and damage in this round. A shovel uppercut lands for the Russian. He follows with two jabs, and while both miss, they interrupt Barzola’s rhythm. Khizriev scrambles behind “The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 2” winner, forces him to a kneeling position and delivers a series of knees to the quadriceps. Barzola not enjoying himself here. Khizriev sticks close to him along the fence, bleeding the remaining time off the clock.

Round 3

The cageside physician examines the cut—it is underneath he left eyebrow—and clears Barzola to move forward. Khizriev looks like he has barely broken a sweat. He feeds Barzola a jab, then another, then dodges a wild overhand left. Khizriev imposing his will for the third straight round. He ducks into a takedown, powers into top position and pins Barzola against the fence. Khizriev applies his ground-and-pound and maneuvers behind his opponent. Barzola builds his base from a knee and gets back to his feet with three minutes to go. Khizriev breaks away, and they drift into the center of the cage. Khizriev shrugs off a level change from the UFC veteran. He stays busy with his jab. Barzola fires a head kick, but Khizriev blocks it and avoids danger. He scoops up Barzola for another takedown, connects with a right hand and controls the hips. Khizriev exits into open space with 75 seconds left. Barzola marching forward, perhaps sensing the fight is lost without a finish. Barzola connects with an uppercut, then sprawls on a takedown. He threatens the neck briefly, but Khizriev breaks free. The Russian circles on the outside, content to salt away another decision.

Ramazanov has a division-high six points in the 170-pound standings, while Musaev has been credited with five. Kevin MacDonald administers the law and order. Ramazanov opens with a low kick and follows with a sharp jab. He shoots on the hips, presses Musaev into the fence and bails on the takedown. Musaev shuts down his advances, jockeys for position in the clinch and breaks free. Musaev scores with a leg kick but backpedals in the face of oncoming pressure. Ramazanov chases another takedown. Musaev spins off the cage and takes the reins in the clinch before exiting into open space. Ramazanov drives a kick into the calf. Musaev answers with one of his own. Musaev stuffs another takedown attempt, using the cage to brace himself. They exchange knees in the clinch. Musaev lands a slapping overhand and narrowly misses a left hook. He sprawls on a takedown attempt and connects with a clubbing right hook on the break. Musaev lands a leg kick but whiffs on a spinning attack. Ramazanov content to let his countryman come to him. Musaev misses two spinning back kicks in the waning seconds.

Round 2

Ramazanov unleashes a right hook to start the round, then moves in on a single-leg. Musaev defends. Ramazanov shoots again and final secures a takedown. Musaev immediately gets back to his feet. He sprawls on another takedown and forces Ramazanov to the center of the cage before exiting. Out of nowhere, Musaev decks Ramazanov with a wicked left hook. Musaev follows up, lands a series of punches—an uppercut chief among them—and forces the stoppage . MacDonald could probably have let it go a little longer, but the writing was on the wall.

Round 1

A welterweight showcase closes out the undercard, as Larkin (25-8, 0-0 PFL) marches into his organizational debut opposite Dominguez (11-6, 0-0 PFL). No points are at stake, as neither man is part of the regular-season field at 170 pounds. Dominguez, a LUX Fight League champion, has won three fights in a row. MacDonald draws the officiating assignment. They meet in the middle. Larkin presses forward behind his jab, dodges a low kick and forces Dominguez to swing and miss. Dominguez counters a knee with an overhand right. Larkin lands an uppercut in close. Dominguez responds with hooks from both hands. The newcomer throwing shots from wide angles. Larkin snaps his head back with a right hand and follows up with a low kick. Midway through the round. Larkin steps into a right hand. He sneaks in a head kick. Dominguez slips a punch, changes levels and secures a takedown. Larkin escapes to his feet. Larkin breaks out of the clinch and snaps down on a guillotine. Dominguez retreats to his back to escape the potential submission. Larkin slams a few standing-to-ground punches into Dominguez’s face. Now, he mixes hammerfists and punches. Dominguez turtles. Larkin unleashes a knee to the body, then swarms with punches for the finish . Good stoppage by MacDonald.

Gabriel Braga (150.6: Missed Weight) vs. Bubba Jenkins (146.0)

Round 1

Featherweight hopefuls touch off the main card, where Braga (13-1, 5-1 PFL) meets a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler and former national champion in Jenkins (21-8, 7-4 PFL). Braga has accrued five points in the regular-season standings, while his counterpart has yet to score. The ubiquitous Stein has more on Jenkins and his role in the “PFL Pressure Cooker” ahead of his latest outing. Braga shot himself in the foot on the scale, as he was docked a point for weighing in 4.6 pounds above the featherweight limit. Herzog answers the call to referee. Glove touch gets us underway. Jenkins opens with leg kicks. He shoots on a single-leg. Braga uses the fence to balance himself and avoid the takedown. Jenkins stays on the hips, works again on a single-leg, feeds knees into the Brazilian’s legs and turns the corner, temporarily scoring the takedown. Braga gets back to his feet, only to be returned to the mat. Jenkins stuck to him like glue at the moment, and he has already chewed up half a round. “USA” chants from the crowd, the fans doing what they can to stay engaged on a decision-heavy night. Jenkins still clinging to the legs of his seated counterpart. Braga pops the body with a few punches but not making much of an effort to get back to his feet. Crowd boos. Braga finally works back to his feet with 20 seconds to go. Jenkins maneuvers behind him and shoots in some right hands as the bell sounds.

Round 2

Jenkins steps into a left hand, shoots on the hips and drives the Brazilian to the fence. Braga escapes, and Jenkins appears to have injured himself. Looks like something is amiss with his right arm. MacDonald moves in to save him from unnecessary damage.

The spotlight shifts back to the welterweight division, as the undefeated Umalatov (15-0, 6-0 PFL) confronts the polarizing Ward (17-8, 0-1 PFL) at 170 pounds. Umalatov has three points under his belt in the regular-season standings, while his adversary remains scoreless. Sherdog’s Stein caught up with Ward in “On His Own Terms” ahead of his encounter with the favored Russian. The 32-year-old Umalatov has secured 11 of his 15 career victories by knockout. Wombacher steps in as the third man in the cage. They touch gloves to get us started. Umalatov gets Ward’s attention with a missed head kick, then buries his shin into his lead leg. Ward gets busy with his jab. Umalatov answers with hooks from both hands. Ward controlling the center and steps into a pair of right hands. Umalatov uses the opportunity to duck into a takedown roughly 90 seconds into the round. He pins Ward on the bottom and goes about exploring the guard. Ward gets back to his feet. Umalatov clinches, lands a knee and drags him back to the mat. He operates out of half guard, drops short punches and flirts with an arm-triangle. He feeds Ward right hands to the body and head, forces him to all fours and catches a guillotine in a scramble. Umalatov transitions to an anaconda choke, sinks his hips, tightens his squeeze and forces the tap .

Round 1

Welterweights take center stage in the co-main event, where SBG Ireland’s Poclit (10-1, 0-0 PFL) fills in for Laureano Staropoli on short notice and takes aim at a four-time NCAA All-American wrestler in Storley (15-3, 0-1 PFL). For more on Storley, check out “No Turning Back” from Sherdog’s Stein. Poclit steps up to the plate on a 10-fight winning streak. MacDonald administers the law and order. They greet each other with a glove tap. Light on his feet, Storley backs up the Moldovan with a clubbing left. Storley shoots on a takedown and drops Poclit to a seated position. He sets up in half guard and works toward an arm-triangle. Poclit springs a reversal and scrambles onto the American’s back, quieting the crowd. He threatens with a rear-naked choke and transitions to a face crank but allows Storley to escape into top position. The South Dakotan moves briefly to side control, then settles in half guard. Storley working hard for an arm-triangle without much luck. Poclit stays active with his legs, making life difficult for the favorite. He extricates himself from an arm-triangle and moves to a front headlock position on Storley. Poclit cuts loose with a few left hands, climbs to full mount and promptly loses position. Storley scrambles on top and ends the round there.

Round 2

Poclit takes an upright stance, commands the center and eats a left hand. Poclit answers with a series of clubbing rights. Storley shoots on a takedown, completes it and goes about trying corral his counterpart. He threatens with several arm-triangles and passes to side control. Poclit reclaims half guard. Storley applies his ground-and-pound, giving the Moldovan something else to think about. Doing a much better job neutralizing Poclit in this round. Chants of “USA!” rain down again. Poclit not doing much to get back to his feet. Storley seems uncertain as to how to attack his opponent’s guard. Poclit makes a pass at a triangle choke but gives up side control. Storley scores with knees to the ribcage before settling back in half guard. Round ends with Storley moving toward another arm-triangle.

Round 3

Poclit sends out his jab to start the round and presses forward with a head kick and push kick to the body. Storley circles. Poclit slams a pair of kicks into his lead leg. Storley bullies his way into the clinch, troubles the Moldovan with attempted trips. Poclit surprises the American with a bulldog choke and pancakes downward. Storley escapes out the back after the tense exchange and moves behind Poclit, who is now on all fours. Repeated right hands crash into Poclit’s face. Storley increasing the intensity of his shots and has Poclit ducking for cover. Storley locks him down in half guard. He feeds Poclit a few punches, forearm strikes and hammerfists. Storley maintains top position and continues to pound away with punches and hammerfists. It may not be enough to procure a finish, but it has likely won him this round. Forty seconds left. Poclit might finally be spent. Storley moves to full mount with 20 seconds to go and unleashes punches with MacDonald hovering above them.

The 34-year-old Loughnane has carved out a spot atop the standings with six points, while his opponent has not yet scored. A former Legacy Fighting Alliance champion, Gonzales approaches the bout on a career-worst three-fight losing streak. Herzog draws the final officiating assignment of the night. No glove touch. Loughnane marches to the center, avoids a right hand from the underdog and goes about stalking. A front kick narrowly misses for the Englishman. Gonzales steps into a right hand, jackknifes out of the way of a leg kick and continues to circle on the outside. Loughnane stays patient. Gonzales presses forward with a multi-punch volley. Loughnane finds a home for his counter right hand over the top but looks to be having issues tracking down the American. Loughnane lands a sharp counter right hand, follows up with a one-two and dodges a combination in return. Neither man doing much offensively as we enter the final minute. Loughnane switches stances in a bid to draw out Gonzales. No luck. He fires a front kick to the body and connects with a low kick, all while avoiding shots being thrown back at him.

Round 2

Loughnane lands a jab, controls the center of the cage and forces Gonzales to take a defensive posture. A heavy leg kick from Loughnane briefly knocks the American off his feet. Gonzales shoots on a takedown and presses the Englishman into the fence. Loughnane breaks free. Gonzales showing less lateral movement now. Another low kick from Loughnane. Gonzales steps into a left hand, setting off a quick exchange. Loughnane scores with an inside low kick. Both men throwing in single strikes. Loughnane alternating between stances and connects with a knee strike that opens a serious cut on Gonzales’ forehead. Herzog pauses the action to have it checked. Gonzales looks like he has been hit by an axe. Cageside physician takes one look at it and shakes his head, resulting in the stoppage . Gonzales would probably be wise to visit a plastic surgeon sometime this week.
