Sioux Falls firework show could be moved to Friday. Here's what attendees need to know

The annual Sioux Falls firework show at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds is a popular Fourth of July event for city residents, but the National Weather Service is predicting for the area to see a significant chance of rain come Independence Day.

With an 80% chance of showers and a thunderstorm or two during the day, and a 40% chance Thursday night, the question is whether this year's firework display will happen as planned or will there be an alternative option if the day is washed out?

Here's what attendees need to know about the show's potential rain date.

Does a rain date exist for the Sioux Falls firework show?

If there’s a high chance of rain on Thursday night, the firework show will be held on Friday instead, said John Small, owner of Sunny Radio and one of teh organizers of this year's event.

What time will organizers make the announcement?

“I don't really have an exact time,” Small said. "We're gonna wait as long as we possibly can and and hope for the very best, because I would love to do it on, you know, the actual day."

Small said he will work with The Fireworkz Store, the firework company for the event, to make a decision on whether to move the event. If the show is moved, they will announce it at some point on Thursday.

Will there be any changes if the event is held on Friday?

In case of rain, the event will still be held at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds and begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

Small said that the event has insurance for both Thursday and Friday, and the entertainment is aware of the rain date.

“We're hoping that even if we do need to do a rain date, it should be very close to what it was planned to be on the Fourth,” he said.

Has there been a rain date in the past?

When Small and his wife took over the firework show in 2020 and created the nonprofit Sioux Falls Fireworks and Community Events, they purchased insurance and set up a rain date for the first time, Small said. Before that, the firework show was cancelled in 2018 due to rain.

Are there any other changes made to the firework show this year?

Small said in response to feedback from previous year, the event has added more food trucks to shorten food truck lines. They will also be selling Pizza Ranch pizza as a fundraiser for the event.

Additionally, following the fireworks, country musician Danica Michaels, of Sioux Falls, will perform. The Sioux Falls Police Department will run the stop light on Madison Street and 12th Street to help with traffic after the event, Small said.

How can people find out if the event is moved?

People can visit the organization’s website or Facebook on Thursday to find out if the show has been moved to Friday.

The full schedule for the event can be found on the Sioux Falls Fireworks website .
