One of the soggiest starts to summer in eastern South Dakota may persist into Independence Day celebrations.

The National Weather Service's latest forecast show periods of showers and storms could move into the state's south-central counties Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The chance for showers and storms expands east by Thursday, particularly during the afternoon and early evening, and especially near and north of Interstate 90, the NWS states.

In Sioux Falls, precipitation chances are highest at 7 a.m. Thursday, with rain potential tapering off to 30 to 40% between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

NWS says the additional Thursday rainfall may cause slight rises in river levels and produce ponding water because of the recent heavy rainfall and flooded rivers. Isolated flash flooding is possible in cities in southeastern South Dakota, including Chamberlain, Mitchell, Sioux City and Sioux Falls, Yankton.
