Large hail, high winds possible as Wednesday thunderstorms approach Sioux Falls

Update as of 9:20 p.m.: The NWS stated on X that "a boundary from northern thunderstorms will be approaching from the north and northeast over the next 20-30 minutes."

The NWS stated 40-50 mph winds could be possible, and "may lead to quick thunderstorm development."

Brandon is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10 p.m.

"If you are traveling between Sioux Falls and Jackson on I-90 or any east-west road in this area an outflow with wind gusts around 50 mph is likely by 10 p.m.," the NWS stated on X.

Update as of 7:30 p.m.: Parts of southeastern South Dakota are now under a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

At 7 p.m,, the NWS' storm prediction center stated radar imagery was showing the development of "isolated strong storms about 50 to 60 statute miles to the southwest of Sioux Falls."

The storms are in a "pocket of extreme instability" and the storms could grow into a larger cluster, moving into southwestern Minnesota late in the evening.

"The instability, combined with moderate deep-layer shear and steep mid-level lapse rates, suggest that supercell formation will be possible," the prediction center update states. "Supercells will likely be associated with large hail and isolated severe wind gusts. Hailstones greater than 2 inches in diameter will be possible. A transition to a more linear structure will be possible as low-level flow increases, especially if a cold pool can organize."

A couple tornadoes may also be possible.

At least one tornado warning has already been issued to the southwest of Sioux Falls, in the Tripp area until 7:45 p.m.

Earlier story: Severe thunderstorms could hit Wednesday afternoon through the evening for the Sioux Falls area, bringing chances of large hail and high winds.

The chances of storms begin at about 2 p.m., with the highest risk of severe weather at about 6 p.m., with storms tapering off at about 10 p.m.
