Majorities of Americans favor forgiving all or some of an individual’s medical debt if the person is facing hardships. That's according to a new poll from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The survey found that about half of Americans say it’s extremely or very important for the U.S. government to provide debt relief for those who have yet to pay off medical treatments. Although reducing student loan debt has been a focus for President Joe Biden, the poll found that Americans are more likely to say medical debt relief should be a government priority.

Managers issue salmon fishing restrictions at McLees Lake for lack of weir data
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has restricted fishing within 500 yards of the McLees Lake river mouth July 1-9. This is the first season without a weir at McLees since 2018 and 2019. That’s because the Qawalangin Tribe and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game didn’t get funding for the McLees Lake weir at Cape Wislow this year. Regulators aren’t collecting data on the salmon population in the area so they aren’t able to provide in-season management, which means they can’t adjust closures or regulations if the run peaks at a different time.
Tustumena Lake Fire Now Covers 35 Acres
The Tustumena Lake Fire coverage estimate has been reduced from 55 acres to 35 acres. The change is largely due to the fire staff’s ability to safely assess the impacted area today. Fire operations are ongoing to meet full suppression efforts. Tactics include delivering supplies by helicopter sling loads into the area, creating saw line, and establishing hose lay to meet containment objectives.
