Supreme Court rules in favor of local homeless encampment laws and overturns the vast regulatory authority of feds in ‘Chevron doctrine’ decision
Two major Supreme Court decisions were issued on Friday morning that impact Alaska. In the first, the court ruled that the city of Grant Pass, Oregon (and others) can enforce a ban on public squatting on city properties, and that such bans do not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment.”

State money could soon be on the way to the community of Stebbins after a devastating school fire. Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a disaster emergency, clearing the way for the state to help pay for the emergency response and recovery efforts in Stebbins. The Stebbins School, and up to nine other buildings were destroyed in a fire that’s believed to have started in the school’s boiler room.
Petersburg teacher contracts a go after Dunleavy signs one-time public education funding
Petersburg teachers will likely have a contract for the next three years. That’s because a deal between the teachers union and the school district met a final requirement this afternoon when Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed the state operating budget without vetoing any one-time public education funding. The two groups came to a tentative contract agreement in May that was contingent on Dunleavy approving all $175 million dollars for public education in the state operating budget.
