The Register reports on Feb. 22, 1950, that Iowans flocked to stores to watch as Iowa State University-owned TV station WOI becomes the first in Iowa to go on the air. "One thing was certain. Everyone seemed to agree that television was like the horseless carriage ― definitely here to stay," it writes, and uses the occasion to launch its own television section. Three years later, the Register and Tribune will join the new medium, launching KRNT-TV. ISU eventually sells WOI to a commercial broadcasting network, and KRNT, spun off as part of a separate company, will become today's KCCI.
Inside Out Wellness & Advocacy Welcomed to Perry Community with Ribbon Cutting
A local business within the Perry community recently held a ribbon cutting to show off their facility. The Perry Chamber of Commerce was at Inside Out Wellness & Advocacy Friday to celebrate the organization’s new Children’s Crisis Stabilization Center and Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in Perry. According to Inside Out, the stabilization center will be providing mental health services for children later this summer and plan to add an adult crisis center in the fall.
ADM Softball Gears Up for Regional Championship Tonight
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Softball team is focusing on winning one final game against Winterset to advance to the state tournament in Fort Dodge. The Tigers will be in Adel tonight battle versus the Huskies in the Class 4A Region 4 Championship game. ADM and Winterset are super familiar with each other as they both represent the Raccoon River Conference and although the Tigers took both games this season, it was by one run in each game. ADM beat Winterset 2-1 in eight innings on June 5th and then captured a 6-5 victory in Adel on June 26th when Sophomore Lauren Hagedorn won the game on a walkoff in the seventh inning.
Chargers Head Softball Coach on Season
With the 2024 season over, AC/GC Chargers Head Softball Coach Eric Van Meter looks back on the team’s season. Van Meter mentions that he’s proud of what the Chargers did this last season, as there was only one team he thought they didn’t play well against. The team ended the season with a 13-13 record on an 11-0 loss to the Van Meter Bulldogs. Van Meter tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the senior class for this year was a strong group that holds a special place in his heart, since his daughter is included among the five.

Iowa weather: Cooler days ahead in Des Moines forecast
DES MOINES, Iowa — Afterthe very strong storms yesterday, we are cooling and calming down. After surveying the damage, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in the Des Moines metro. It formed in Urbandale and traveled about seven miles before lifting near Des Moines Water Works. Wind speeds were estimated at 105 mph.
John Deere announces workforce reduction impacting salaried workers
IOWA (KWWL) -- John Deere is planning to cut some salaried employees from its workforce beginning next week, according to an email sent to workers. In the email KWWL obtained, the company says that an employee meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:30 a.m. A new round of workforce reductions is expected.
