An experienced local baker is preparing to shake up the Lehigh County pastry scene with her first brick and mortar. Sunny Moon Sconery, the passion project of Celia Strouse, will be making its Washington Township debut this fall, reports local media outlet WFMZ .

Strouse will be moving her scones and other delicious baked treats into the space soon to be vacated by Wild & Free Bakery at 8281 PA-873. The baker tells What Now Philadelphia that the path that led her to Slatington began, improbably enough, with the pursuit of Japanese animation.

“As a parent seeking to indulge her daughter’s passion for anime and manga, we embarked on a visit to the market’s manga store. Simultaneously, I had been looking for a kitchen space near my home in Bethlehem to launch my culinary venture. Never had the Slatington Market in mind.” she explains, adding “Unbeknownst to me, the universe had a grand design in store. While admiring the booths at the market, I couldn’t help but inquire about their availability. To my surprise, I learned that Wild & Free Bakery, a beloved establishment at the market, was about to close. It was as if the stars had aligned, guiding me to the perfect opportunity. I was at the right place at the right time.”

Strouse has spent years developing her abilities; her personal journey helped her discover a passion for scones-an oft overlooked pastry. She states: “As an avid home baker, I dreamed of sharing my culinary creations with others. Most recently, my baking adventures have taken me down the path of sourdough. It was then that I stumbled upon the art of crafting artisan sweet and savory scones. Determined to bring my vision to life, I embarked on a mission to create a delectable selection of sourdough scones that captivate taste buds and leave an unforgettable impression. As I continue to hone my craft, I look forward to introducing even more innovative and fresh flavors to my growing menu.”

Strouse is hoping to introduce future regulars to their new favorite treat-something they may not have any previous experience with. She describes her signature items, saying “Sourdough scones are a unique and delightful treat. We’re redefining scones as you know it! Your scone is not supposed to be a sad dry heap of carbs. The best scones are crispy on the edges and tender in the middle. Treat yourself to our artisan scones with a delightful blend of fresh ingredients, baked into tangy sourdough which helps give them an extra tender crumb.”

Guests can look forward to a wide variety of delectable bites when Sunny Moon opens in early September. Visitors with dietary restrictions needn’t worried; Strouse has them covered. She states: “We’ll be boasting a rotating menu of tantalizing sweet and savory sourdough scones, along with vegan and gluten-free scone options for those with dietary restrictions. In addition to the weekly scone offerings, the market will showcase specials that will rotate regularly. Expect to find freshly baked sourdough bagels, soft pretzels, and focaccia, perfect for a quick bite while you shop. We’re bringing much needed gluten-free and vegan options to the market so we plan to offer GF and vegan banana and pumpkin breads, black bean brownies, apple crisp and other baked goods. With a rotating menu, weekly specials, and a commitment to gluten-free and vegan options, you’re sure to find delectable baked goods that will satisfy your cravings.”
