SLOAN, Iowa (KCAU) — WinnaVegas Casino Resort will be donating $200,000 to the Winnebago Tribe’s annual powwow.

The homecoming celebration is held every year in honor of Chief Little Priest. According to a release, in the summer of 1866, Chief Little Priest was part of a group of Nebraska Volunteers veterans honored in a homecoming festival. Little Priest would soon die of wounds received in service, and his sacrifice has been celebrated annually since.

The raising of Little Priest’s service flag is a key part of the annual powwow, which now features vendors, contests and more spread across several days. 2024’s celebration will be the 158th, making it the longest running homecoming celebration in the country.

“WinnaVegas Casino Resort is proud to support the Winnebago Tribe’s efforts on hosting one of the nation’s most celebrated powwows” WinnaVegas General Manager Tom Teesdale said in a statement. “We wanted to be a part of this event because it celebrates the Winnebago Tribe’s rich history and is one of the tribe’s most important cultural events of the year.”

The powwow will be held from July 25 to 28 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Winnebago. Click here to learn more.
