Top Smith County grads examine medical careers
Recent Raleigh, Taylorsville and Mize graduates planning for or considering a career in medicine enjoyed a diverse program at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel that included a tour of key hospital departments and explanation of various procedures, ranging from endoscopy to emergency services. The tour was planned by Smith County School District career coach Kara Kimbrough.

Ex-officer out on $50K bond after statutory rape charge
Going to court is routine for law enforcement officials. But in this case, the officer was in handcuffs, not escorting the one in custody. Rodney Jernigan, 26, of Raleigh made his initial appearance Thursday in Smith County Justice Court on a charge of statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. Judge Hulon West set his bond at $50,000, which he posted a short time later and was released from Smith County Jail. Jernigan was ordered to have no contact with his accuser or her family. The Reservoir Police Department officer was arrested Monday and placed on administrative leave without pay, but he has since resigned, according to reports.
