All season long the Firebirds have played tough opponents. They did not always win, but the players learned a lot about working together. Teamwork was a key factor in the Firebirds 3-0 win over Neuse Charter in the second round of the state 1A soccer playoffs.

Savannah Penn, a senior, scored all three goals for the Firebirds. Samantha Carroll, a sophomore, provided two assists on the Penn goals.

The Neuse Charter coach became furious in the first half. He could be heard screaming at players before sending them back on the pitch. Things became so heated he sent his assistant coach packing.

On the Falls Lake side, head coach Lindsay Graham and assistant coach Mike Graham could be heard offering words of encouragement and positive feedback to players.

The positivity was contagious. Players could be heard supporting and cheering on their teammates.

Neuse Charter’s team did not give up despite being down 2-0 at the half.

The Cougars managed to take 18 shots on goal even though Falls Lake’s defense was playing tough.

Freshman goalkeeper, Destiny Williams, covered or knocked away all 18 Neuse Charter attempts.

Penn put the icing on the cake late in the second half with Carroll passing the ball at the right time to the right spot.

Falls Lake will face Hobbton in the third round of the playoffs.
