River Rat Regatta seeking entries

SMITHFIELD — The 2024 River Rat Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10, on the Neuse River in downtown Smithfield.

In the annual event, two-person teams race their boats from the river’s boat ramp to the finish line a relatively short distance away. But here’s the twist: The boats and paddles must be made entirely of corrugated cardboard, glue and duct tape.

Here’s this year’s schedule:

• Boat registration — 8 a.m.

• Boat judging — 9:30 a.m.

• Captains meeting — 9:45 a.m.

• Regatta begins — 10 a.m.

• Awards — 11:45 a.m.

A DJ will play music from 9 a.m. to noon at the boat ramp.
