SMITHFIELD — The town’s National Night Out celebration is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road.

Now in its 41st year, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that aims to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.

Sponsors of Smithfield’s event include the Smithfield, Selma and Wilson’s Mills police departments, the Smithfield and Selma fire departments, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Johnston County EMS, the N.C. Highway Patrol and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

“National Night Out is one of the events we look forward to every year,” said Brian Eaves, Smithfield’s public information officer. “The event builds relationships between our community and law enforcement in a festive, positive environment.

“We’re proud to partner with other local public safety agencies to bring forth a wonderful evening of celebration.”

The evening includes free food, a petting zoo, bounce houses, K9 demonstrations, giveaways, police vehicle displays and booths highlighting crime prevention and safety.
