SMITHFIELD — UNC Health Johnston has named Denise Evans, an MRI technologist, Ambassador of the Month.

During a recent presentation, CEO Tom Williams said Evans helps patients feel at ease during their procedures. “She reassures them and offers a choice of music to help them relax,” he said. “She takes the time to make sure they’re OK.

“Judging by her smile and enthusiasm, it’s clear she loves her work.”

Before joining the hospital in 2013, Evans worked as an X-ray tech with an orthopedic surgeon for 20 years. Afterward, she returned to school and earned her diploma in magnetic resonance imaging.

Throughout her career, she’s most enjoyed being with people, Evans said. “I love my patients, and I enjoy the camaraderie with teammates,” she added. “I try to look out for everyone.”

In her department, she’s also known for the home-baked goodies she shares with teammates. Her favorite is carrot cake.

Evans, who grew up in Johnston County’s Meadow community, took a health occupations course while in high school. At a career fair during her senior year, she decided to enroll in the radiography program at Johnston Community College because it sounded the most interesting.

“And it’s been a rewarding career ever since,” Evans said.

She and her husband, Gary, live in Princeton. In their spare time, they enjoy traveling and spending time with family, including a new puppy, Maggie May.

Through the ambassador program, Johnston recognizes teammates who go above and beyond the call of duty. They deliver quality care, foster teamwork and offer excellent service.

In addition to a designated month-long parking space, Evans will receive eight hours of paid time off.
