SSS grad receives Gates Scholarship

SMITHFIELD — Denasia Dixon has received a Gates Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is a June graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School.

The Gates Scholarship is based on evidence that a last-dollar scholarship can enable high-potential, low-income minority students to excel in their coursework and graduate from college.

In all, 750 students received Gates Scholarships. Some 53,000 applied.

Dixon plans to study psychology and hopes to teach psychology internationally.
