    Smithland residents stick around to help their neighbors

    SMITHLAND, Iowa (KCAU) — Voluntary evacuations remain in place in both Correctionville and Smithland.

    Tuesday, county road workers estimate 12 of Woodbury County’s bridges remain unpassable. there is no timeline yet for when they may be cleared as well as when Highway 20 may reopen in the Correctionville area.

    Many residents of Smithland are sticking around to help their neighbors.

    “They weren’t worried about personal properties or valuables. They were worried about what they can do for their neighbors,” said Smithland Mayor Troy McKenna.

    How to help flooding victims in Siouxland

    For residents of Turin, Smithland, Rodney, and surrounding communities affected by the Little Sioux River, an emergency shelter is open at the Onawa Community Center.
