Emory Smyrna Hospital announced plans to phase out minimal services and close its doors in December.

Located on Cobb Parkway near Rhyne Park, Emory Smyrna has provided limited services since October 2015. The hospital staffs about 20 employees, with the majority working only part-time and providing outpatient imaging services.

The hospital plans to phase out imaging services in September and its two patient beds will be discontinued in December. The hospital will officially close December 29, 2024, according to Emory Healthcare.

Employees will have the option to fulfill positions at other Emory Healthcare locations.

“We value our patients who receive care at Emory Smyrna Hospital, as well as our dedicated employees who work at the Smyrna location,” Emory said in the statement. “We are committed to smooth transitions to other Emory Healthcare facilities for both patients and employees.”

Originally founded as a joint-venture between Emory Healthcare and Adventist Health System in Florida, the hospital opened as Emory-Adventist Hospital in 2005. The facility closed its doors in October 2014 and reopened as Emory Smyrna Hospital one year later with no emergency or obstetrical services provided.

Plans to get back to full operation were thwarted due to challenges related to the Certificate of Need process and repercussions from the COVID pandemic.

Emory Healthcare reports that a medical office building located on the same grounds — which houses both a pharmacy and an Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center clinic — will remain operational, with no immediate impacts.

Emory Healthcare said they are currently exploring their options for the Smyrna hospital campus, but have not made any decisions about future plans.

“Emory Healthcare is committed to retaining a presence in the Smyrna community,” Emory said.

The company said they plan to retain their presence in the community through an outpatient musculoskeletal clinic.

Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton said he was not surprised to hear about the hospital’s closure. However, Norton said he looks forward to what the future holds for the grounds.

“While I hate to see Emory close, I think this is an opportunity,” Norton said. “The site is just south of the stretch of South Cobb Drive between Concord and Windy Hill where we will be doing $30 million worth of improvements in the near future, and I believe the right developer could do something special there with a mix of uses for Smyrna residents to enjoy.”

Patients who received treatment from the hospital can call 844-335-6968 to retrieve their medical records, if needed.
