Marion, Smyth County talk about 2025 fireworks
While fireworks aren’t part of Marion’s plans this week, the possibility exists for 2025. Last month, Ken Heath, Marion’s director of community and economic development, told the Marion Town Council that he’s in talks with County Administrator Shawn Utt about the possibility of using the open area created by the demolition of Marion Intermediate School as a launching zone.
Marion man convicted of murder
A Marion man has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of another man. Smyth County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Phillip Blevens says 33-year-old Jacob Seth Andreshak is convicted of first-degree murder. Authorities say Andreshak shot another man on Easter of 2023 at a home on Remington Lane in Marion. Sentencing is scheduled for October 31. Andreshak could face life in prison plus three years.

Report: No foul play in Marion inmate’s death in March

VSP investigating 2 fatal crashes late last week in SWVA
Virginia State Police is investigating 2 fatal crashes in Southwest Virginia late last week. The first occurred last Thursday around 4 p.m. on Route 611 in Washington County. That’s when the Jeep driven by 43 year old Seth A. Easley of Saltville, Va. Lost control on Route 611. Easly died at the scene. The second crash occurred last Friday at 7:00 a.m. on Interstate 81 northbound in Smyth County. A Toyota driven by 36 year old Casey A. Hornsby of Central City, KY. was heading northbound on Interstate 81 in the right lane when the driver lost control flipping the vehicle several times. Casey was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Sequoia suffered minor injuries. Both crashes remain under investigation.

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that occurred Friday (June 21, 2024) at 7:00 a.m. on Interstate 81 northbound in Smyth County. A 2001 Toyota Sequoia was heading northbound on Interstate 81 in the right lane when the driver lost control, went off of the left side of the road, struck the guardrail, bounced back onto the interstate, and overturned several times.
