Representatives of Chilhowie and Saltville police departments, Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Smyth County court officials, and veterans’ organizations were on hand with their families to greet the public, provide school supplies to children, showcase rescue and enforcement vehicles and the Med-Flight helicopter, and offer demonstrations in K9 skills and drone capabilities. Various vendors from local organizations, including healthcare, libraries, and service providers, offered school supplies. Attendees enjoyed free hot dogs and drinks, music by From the Edge, performances from Simplicity Dance Team, a water slide and bounce house, and registered to win bicycles and door prizes.
Rubber ducks on the river
It was a shortened race this year for the third annual Great Rubber Duck Race in the Holston River Middle Fork due to a tree limb stretching across part of the river before reaching the footbridge. Approximately 1,000 colorful little rubber ducks were released into the river at the fishing pier and meandered down the sluggish water to the finish line. Winning duck numbers were: 1st, 445; 2nd, 694; 3rd, 942; and Last Place, 783. The family fun day part of the event organized by the Smyth County Chamber of Commerce in Chilhowie Town Park included bounce houses, foam fest, face painting, and games for the kids along with vendors, music and food. Proceeds benefit the Smyth County Imagination Library.
