WA transportation projects score nearly $90M in federal grants
Eight transportation projects in Washington will receive a combined $89.7 million in federal grant funding, Democratic members of the state’s congressional delegation said this week. The largest grant, $25 million awarded to King County Parks, will go toward closing a gap in a planned 42-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail — known as the Eastrail — between Renton and Snohomish County. The portion of the project the grant will partially pay for will involve retrofitting a steel bridge that crosses over 16 lanes of Interstate 90. ...
Dozens of women gained hands-on training at Future Women in EMS & Fire workshop
EVERETT—More than 30 Snohomish County women spent the weekend climbing ladders, handling hoses, forcing doors and learning the basics of emergency medical care during the Future Women in EMS and Fire workshop that was held at the South County Fire Training Center in Everett on June 22 and 23.
Project to Close I-90 Eastrail Gap Gets Federal Funding Boost
Two projects on Eastrail — the planned 42-mile bike and pedestrian trail underway from Renton to Snohomish County — have received $30 million in federal grant funding, according to an announcement today from the nonprofit guiding the Eastrail effort. The money includes $5 million for planning the 2-mile...

Drewel Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.
Dive into summer safety
As families welcome summer in Snohomish County, and with it trips to local beaches, lakes and rivers, water safety is essential. In fact, recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal an alarming increase in drowning incidents, making water safety a top priority for families and communities.
Everett Herald lays off nearly half its newsroom staff
The Everett Herald laid off 12 editorial staff members last week, about half its newsroom, nearly three months after the Snohomish County paper saw a change of ownership. The cuts are to “invest in and organize our team to move forward to produce a product that continues to improve and serve,” said Todd Carpenter, chair of Carpenter Media Group, in a Herald article posted Thursday.
Larsen kickoff in Everett canceled over fear of pro-Palestinian protesters
EVERETT — U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen canceled his Snohomish County campaign launch Monday, due to the possibility of pro-Palestine demonstrators attending. The event had been scheduled to take place at the Scuttlebutt Brewing Taproom. Larsen said pro-Palestine demonstrators had disrupted community events previously held in the district. He was...
Skagit County dismissed from wrongful death lawsuit
Skagit County has been dismissed as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a man shot and killed by a Sedro-Woolley police officer in February 2022. Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Marybeth Dingledy ruled that although a Skagit County Sheriff’s Office deputy followed David A. Babcock at a distance on the night he was killed, the deputy’s actions were not negligent and were not the cause of Babcock’s death. ...
Everett Herald newsroom strikes amid layoffs
EVERETT — News staff at The Daily Herald marched through downtown Everett for a one-day strike Monday, following a dozen layoffs in the newsroom and a year of unsuccessful labor negotiations. Carpenter Media Group, the new Mississippi-based partial owners of Snohomish County’s daily newspaper, announced a plan last week...
Form community group to strengthen newspaper
It is with great concern I strongly oppose the layoffs of Herald employees. Carpenter Media of Mississippi wrote the layoffs were necessary to “improve the economics of the newspaper and better serve the community.” It is my belief these two goals are in conflict with one another. Absentee...
Layoffs chipping away at local journalism, democracy
Recent layoffs at the Herald are dishonorable and heartbreaking. Carpenter Media bought this reputable paper just to gut it. Todd Carpenter lives thousands of miles away from Everett and does not give a hoot about our community. Todd, shame on you for chipping away at local journalism. Shame on you for chipping away at democracy. You have no business gobbling up these papers just to destroy them.
Herald owners don’t realize what’s being cut
I am a longtime reader of the Everett Herald and a lifelong Snohomish County resident. I am disheartened and angry that Carpenter Media Group has decided with little explanation to layoff over half of our dedicated journalists. Since we don’t have cable or watch televised news, The Everett Herald is...
