Three local teams went into Tuesday night one step away from playing for a state championship.

The South Central softball and baseball teams and the Greene Central baseball team all opened their respective best-of-three semifinal series on Tuesday night.

In 3A softball, the No. 6 Falcons (20-5) traveled to No. 5 South Brunswick (23-4) on Tuesday night on the heels of a chaotic ride. They rolled past North Brunswick 4-1 in their opener before a 10-0 blowout of Western Harnett, but then came a wild 8-7 win in eight innings over Union Pines in the third round before a more comfortable 10-5 decision one night later against Dixon.

South Brunswick is the first higher seed South Central faced in the playoffs. Game 2 is set for Wednesday night in Winterville.

In 3A baseball, it already has been a memorable ride for No. 14 South Central (22-4), which has played nothing but higher seeds since an opening-round home win over Person. Since then, it’s been three straight road wins over Cape Fear, Currituck and Croatan.

Now, the Falcons are locked into a series with No. 4 Terry Sanford which also began on the road on Tuesday night and continues Thursday in Winterville.

In 2A baseball, No. 1 Greene Central (25-0) has done whatever has been needed to remain unbeaten, winning some blowouts and some nail-biters already this postseason.

The Rams outscored Goldsboro, South Lenoir and Bunn by a combined 28-1 in the first three rounds before gutting a out 1-0, nine-inning triumph over Midway in Friday’s fourth round. GC opened its best-of-three series against No. 2 Whiteville (23-1) on Tuesday night in Snow Hill.

Game 2 in the series is set for Thursday in Whiteville.
