The culmination of a years-long initiative that was started 15 years ago by local eighth grade teacher, Paul Anderson, and his class and was reinvigorated in 2021 by Marsha Hovey, Adam Mahler, and a dedicated group of community members, takes place next week, when Richie Conklin and Primary Concrete will break ground for the Osceola Skatepark .

The groundbreaking celebration is open to the public, taking place on Tuesday, July 9th at 5pm at Oakey Park in downtown Osceola. The park is expected to be complete before September, in time for the 100th anniversary of the Osceola Fair.

We spoke to Marsha and Mahler in May when the skatepark was approved by the town.

"Our goal is to have the skatepark completed at the end of this summer for it to be a part of the 100th year celebration of the Osceola Fair that takes place right next to the skatepark," explained Marsha. "So we get to introduce this unbelievable project to hundreds and hundreds of people that come through and introduce them to skateboarding in a way that they might only know through TV and video games."

While the concrete is about to be set for the skatepark, fundraising is on-going to help with skatepark upkeep. The crew at Osceola Skatepark just released a new collection of shirts designed by well-known Oakland, CA-based artist, famous for her signature frogs and toads, Maybell Eequay. Maybell grew up in Osceola.

The shirts are available for pre-order on the Osceola Skatepark website .

Big congratulations to Marsha, Mahler, and everyone that has been a part of making this dream, ahem, concrete.
