The Rockstar Energy Open is a brand new U.S. skateboard competition that took place from August 23-25 in Portland, Oregon, and the snowboarders showed up to support their skateboard counterparts.

Rockstar athletes and pro snowboarders Sam Taxwood, Jill Perkins, Mikey Ciccarelli had a presence there with Chris Grenier running media coverage and Eddie Wall supporting the skaters. To top it all off, it was actually Jill Perkins 30th birthday too. What a way to celebrate.

The event was held at Waterfront Park and featured both street and park competitions, along with live music, art installations, and local vendors. Unlike many existing skateboarding events that require an invitation to compete, the Rockstar Energy Open introduces an open qualification format. This approach addresses the current landscape where most U.S.-based events are invite-only. The open qualifier offers a unique opportunity for lesser-known skaters to compete alongside top pros, world champions, and Olympians.

The Rockstar Energy Open was live-streamed on Platfrm.com, CaffeineTV, ProSieben, and FuelTV, with Platfrm also featuring exclusive athlete interviews and behind-the-scenes content. Platfrm broadcast 19 hours of live coverage during the event.

Two custom-built courses—a street course and a transition bowl—were constructed at Waterfront Park, complete with bleachers, vendor areas, and art installations. The event was free to the public, and pro skaters consulted by Rockstar were very excited about the open qualifier, which seems to have brought new faces into the competition and created a more inclusive contest environment.

How did this relate to snowboarding, you ask?

Well, there is an alleged Rockstar Energy Open to take place of the Dew Tour this winter, and we can imagine it will be in this same format. Can not wait to see what happens. Keep your eyes on Rockstar for any and all updates about the upcoming Rockstar Energy Opens, as this past weekend was a smash success.
