Plans are now in the works to conserve and steward those trees on millions of acres of federal land, with public comments accepted this summer. The guidance stems from President Biden’s 2022 executive order to “define, inventory and analyze threats to mature and old-growth forests” and develop recommendations related to “land management and changing climates,” according to the USDA, which oversees the Forest Service.
Eagle County commissioners have more questions for developers of big, complicated West End project
The proposed West End workforce housing project in Edwards is big and complicated, and the Eagle County Board of Commissioners is taking its time in making a decision. The board has held three hearings so far, each lasting roughly three hours, to discuss the project. The next hearing, set for Sept. 9, will likely start the board’s deliberations on the project. After the Aug. 5 hearing, which focused on public comment, the commissioners asked representatives of East West Partners, the project’s developer, to come back with answers to several questions.
Garfield County commissioners approve purchase of Habitat for Humanity workforce housing unit
Garfield County Commissioners voted 2-1 Monday to make a $150,000 purchase priority in a one-bedroom unit in a Habitat for Humanity housing project. The unit, prioritized for county employees, is part of an 88-unit project in West Glenwood. Commissioners Tom Jankovsky and Mike Samson voted in favor of the purchase while Commissioner John Martin opposed the measure.
Helicopter responding to single-tree fire in Glenwood Canyon
A single-tree fire likely started from a lightning strike in Glenwood Canyon could be extinguished soon, with a helicopter already on scene dumping water on it. Since it is high up on the canyon wall, there is no ground access but the helicopter should be able to get it under control, a U.S. Forest Service spokesperson said.
