    Lightning starts fire in San Mateo Mountains, west of Socorro

    SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) – The U.S. Forest Service says lightning has sparked a new fire west of Socorro. The fire, called the Fisher Fire, was reported July 1, 2024.

    Fire crews were initially delayed due to weather issues, the Forest Service says. July 3, crews were able to access the fire to begin their response.

    • Location : Remote mountainous terrain of northwest San Mateo Mts. on the Magdalena Ranger District – New Mexico on the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands
    • Fire Size : 0.1 acres
    • Contained : 0%
    • Structures Burned : The Fisher Fire is not a threat to any values at risk or communities, and there are no evacuations in effect .
    • Cause of Fire Lightning
    • Area Closures: None
    • Vegetation : Grass, timber and brush
    • Response : Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service
    • Smoke : May be visible from NM 60 southwest of Madalena, NM
