Incidental Take Authorization: City and Borough of Sitka's Gary Paxton Industrial Park Vessel Haulout Project in Sitka, Alaska
NOAA Fisheries has received a request from the City and Borough of Sitka for authorization to take marine mammals incidental to the Gary Paxton Industrial Park Vessel Haulout Project in Sawmill Cove in Sitka, Alaska. NOAA Fisheries is requesting comments on its proposal to issue an incidental harassment authorization to incidentally take marine mammals during the specified activities. NOAA Fisheries is also requesting comments on a possible one-time, 1-year renewal that could be issued under certain circumstances and if all requirements are met, as described in Request for Public Comments at the end of this notice. NOAA Fisheries will consider public comments prior to making any final decision on the issuance of the requested MMPA authorization and agency responses will be summarized in the final notice of our decision.
Dutch Harbor Coast Guard station upgrades to Marine Safety Unit, welcomes new crew
Dutch Harbor’s U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment is now a Marine Safety Unit. At a June 24 ceremony, the station welcomed a new crew and was formally redesignated. Coast Guard personnel said the ceremony was an opportunity to make the transition from detachment to unit official for the community. The station was technically upgraded earlier this year, when Lt. Tyler Justus was named commanding officer.

Alaska businesswoman faces prison time for tax evasion with storied Nome hotel
An Anchorage woman pleaded guilty last Wednesday to evading taxes on income from her Nome business, which was destroyed in a fatal fire in 2017. Court documents show that Tina Yi kept two sets of financial records for the Polaris hotel, bar and liquor store from 2014 until it burned down. One set of records accurately captured the business’ earnings, while the other understated its yearly income. Yi gave the false records to the accountants she hired to prepare her business’s taxes, which resulted in false federal tax returns from 2014 to 2018.

A pastor reportedly hit his wife in the head while on a flight from Seattle, Washington, to Anchorage, Alaska, and is now banned from ever flying with the airline again. On July 2, Roger Allan Holmberg, Sr. and his wife were traveling for ministry related purposes. During the flight, the wife of the pastor's seat was upgraded, while his was not.
