The Delaney Park Strip was gleaming with rainbows and glitter as crowds gathered on Saturday for the annual Anchorage Pride Parade. Dozens of booths were set up to sell art, clothes and trinkets while others distributed information about queer support services in and around the city. A parade of hundreds circled downtown, with people dancing, cheering and waving rainbow flags. Participants walked, danced, drove and rollerbladed their way through the street to fun music and massive cheers.
Anchorage Mayor LaFrance announces 6 new executive hires
Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has announced six new executive appointments. In a statement, LaFrance said Barbara Jones will be deputy chief of staff. Jones previously served as Anchorage municipal clerk before retiring last year. She has also worked as the municipal ombudsman and as executive director and staff attorney for the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission. Jones joins LaFrance’s previously announced chief of staff Katie Scovic.

Last week, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed this year’s state budget into law, including a one-time funding boost of about $175 million to school districts. The Juneau School District gets a $5.2 million slice of that. But this money comes months after the Juneau Board of Education controversially voted to consolidate schools and reduce staff to offset a multi-million dollar deficit.
Kodiak nonprofit raising funds to add another cabin at Pasagshak recreation site
Public use cabins across the Kodiak archipelago are getting lots of use this summer, especially the one located at Pasagshak State Recreation site, near the end of the island’s road system. Now the nonprofit Friends of Kodiak State Parks is raising money to build a second cabin in the area later this year.
