You must have heard about narcissist, right? Narcissism has been a quite popular term in the last few years, but what is it really to be a narcissist? One may call their peers or family members as narcissists jokingly, but narcissism in clinic is a personality disorder leading to destruction of interpersonal relations and emotional disturbance.

Narcissism is not just about being plain selfish or conceited; rather, it is a derivate of maladaptive thinking and disordered behavior patterns in the inner self.

But the paradox of narcissists is that quite often they play the characters of confidents, friendly, and very social people very well. Those characteristics are nothing deeper than anxiety coupled with megalomania; beset by rage, envy, and empathy.

Artificially, they create a self-image which is not corresponding to the real one to keep out the emotional distress, and they keep sustaining this fake image through continuous control from the environment.

Thus, these so-called “chameleons” can become toxic persons who camouflage their destructive behaviors and remain unnoticed or even receive direct or indirect support from those around them.
