SOMERVILLE, NJ - Mayor Brian Gallagher released a statement Sunday reacting to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump Saturday night at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa.

Police sharpshooters killed the suspected gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crook, a 20-year-old who lived one hour from the site of the rally in western Pennsylvania. Investigators say Crook fired as many as eight rounds from an AR-15 rifle from the roof of a nearby building before he was killed by the sharpshooters positioned on the roof of another nearby building adjacent to the stage where Trump had been speaking.

Trump, bloodied by a shot that ripped through his right ear, was treated at a nearby hospital and returned to his home in Bedminster, NJ late Saturday night. One person seated in the bleachers behind Trump was killed; two others were critically wounded and remain hospitalized.

    Gallagher's statement follows:

"We mourn the tragic loss of life and extend heartfelt sympathies to the families of those injured and killed in the appalling assassination attempt on former President Trump. Such violence has no place in our society, and we must stand united against these heinous acts. Our thoughts are with all affected, and with law enforcement as they investigate this senseless tragedy. Let us come together as one people, Americans, fostering peace, understanding of differing opinions, and continued resilience. Our American way of life will always prevail."
