Sonoma County strips park rangers of peace officer status
photo credit: USFWS Sonoma County supervisors have controversially reclassified regional park rangers away from peace officer status, to the less law enforcement focused public officer status. It's a move widely condemned by park rangers like Kat Pringle. "I don't know that there's much else to be done," Pringle said outside the Board of Supervisors chambers in Santa Rosa after the decision. "As far as I understand it, the director does have this kind of power." County supervisors, minus the absent James Gore, unanimously approved the reclassification. For Sonoma County Regional Parks leadership, it’s a simple change; one which Deputy Director Melanie Parker said puts...

In recent years, political comedy — once dominantly popular — has become as strident as the politicians it mocks, but now working stand-up comics are finding grateful audiences for a more personal sense of humor. “With my comedy, I offer an escape. I share silly stories about my life,” said Joel Byars of Altanta, one of three headliners starring this month at the sixth annual Wine Country ...

A federal judge ruled last month Sonoma County’s former courthouse administrator failed to provide evidence of racial discrimination and retaliation in a lawsuit over her 2022 firing. In her response filed Monday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Arlene Junior contends Judge William Orrick erred in his decision and her matter should still go before a jury. The dispute is the latest ...
No on J
Don’t be fooled by those behind Measure J. Adults don’t need to be told what to eat. Measure J is hiding behind a thin veil of ‘animal welfare.’ It is outlined so clearly in their mission statement that they hope to convert the whole world to becoming vegan. Although they may feel this is a noble goal, attempting to regulate what people eat, and where they get their food, is a slippery slope.
Explore county’s scenic routes with Russian River Rail Bikes
Rail bike tours made their Sonoma County debut in Cloverdale last April and, weather permitting, will continue each weekend through October. Russian River Rail Bikes is operated entirely by volunteers, with between four and five on site each weekend and is a branch of the nonprofit Golden Gate Railroad Museum. The organization is using the old Northwestern Pacific Railroad tracks, currently owned by Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, north of the train depot for their rail bike operation.
