Ingredients for 14 bombs:
1 lb pizza dough(455 g), left out at room temperature for
15-20 minutes
7 slices american cheese, cut in half 14 frozen mini meatballs, thawed
1½ cup baking soda (45 g)
5 cups water(1.2L)
1 egg, beaten
coarse sea salt
yellow mustard, for serving (optional)
Preparation:
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Begin by cutting the pizza dough into 14 evenly sized pieces. Working with one piece at a time, gently stretch the dough to form a long strip, approximately 8 inches (20 centimeters) in length. At the top of the strip, place a piece of cheese, followed by a meatball.
Carefully roll up the cheese and meatballs within the dough, ensuring that they are completely enclosed. Rotate the dough halfway through rolling to ensure even coverage. Tighten the dough and seal any gaps by pressing the edges together. Place the prepared roll on the baking sheet, and repeat this process with the remaining dough, cheese, and meatballs.
In a medium-sized saucepan, heat 5 cups of water on high until it reaches a boil. Once the water is boiling, stir in the baking soda until completely dissolved. Allow the pot to return to a boil. Gradually drop 3-5 rolled dough balls into the pot at a time. Boil them for 20-30 seconds, stirring them gently. After boiling, carefully remove the dough balls and pat them dry with paper towels before transferring them back to the baking sheet. Repeat this process with the remaining dough balls.
Brush every boiled ball with a beaten egg, followed by a sprinkle of coarse sea salt. Proceed to bake for 15-20 minutes until the exteriors are golden brown. Serve the warm balls with mustard, if preferred. Bon appétit!
