House committee to revive private school subsidies debate in Texas
The Texas House of Representatives Committee on Public Education is set to meet on Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. According to an agenda posted online Tuesday, members will in part look into "the use of education savings accounts in other states and make recommendations for a Texas program, including suggestions on eligibility and prioritization of applicants."
School districts, food banks pitch in to provide meals to children during summer months
As recent as 2022, nearly 23% of children in Texas suffered from food insecurity. The state now leads the nation in food insecurity affecting nearly 5 million people. In North Texas, around 778,000 people face hunger. About 287,000, or 1 in 5, are children. These struggles are only exacerbated during summer vacation when food is not as readily available during the school year.
Texas DPS discovers 17 illegal immigrants in a residential home
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Texas DPS troopers and special agents discovered 17 illegal immigrants staying in a house near Regina Drive. According to Texas DPS on July 15, at 7:00 p.m., while the home was being searched, a registration check was conducted on a white GMC pickup truck located inside the car garage.
Texas adds two fugitives to most wanted list, offers $5,000 reward
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has added two fugitives with ties to Central Texas to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Criminal Illegal Immigrants List. Fabian Martinez Toribio, a 25-year-old criminal illegal immigrant from Mexico, has been wanted by the Austin Police Department since January 2024 for aggravated sexual assault of a child. Additionally, in February 2024, a warrant was issued out of Travis County for his arrest for possession of a controlled substance. Martinez Toribio was previously arrested and convicted of entry without inspection in April 2018 and was subsequently removed from the United States. In October 2023, he was arrested by the Manor Police Department for resisting arrest/search and possession of a controlled substance, then bonded out of jail. Martinez Toribio is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs about 150 pounds, and has ties to Travis County, including the cities of Austin and Pflugerville.
