CHICAGO — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham took chile to the national stage in her speech to the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.

“In my state, we like things spicy, a little chile on everything, a little kick in our campaigns,” New Mexico’s governor said at the start of her speech to the delegation. “And let me tell you, we are feeling en fuego now.”

She used the metaphor to describe the excitement around the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket sparked after President Joe Biden said he would not seek reelection.

On the convention’s second night, Lujan Grisham was in a decent speaking slot surrounded by speeches from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Health care was the central theme for Lujan Grisham. Her speech was preceded by a video that opens with a line from a former President Donald Trump campaign speech where he says he will repeal the health care law.

“This election is about protecting our democracy and securing our freedoms, including the right to affordable, quality health care,” Lujan Grisham said.

Harris, Lujan Grisham said, will “cap drug costs, go after corporate price-gougers, and ensure every woman who needs it can access reproductive health care.”

She pointed to Harris voting against any proposals brought by Senate Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act while she served as a California senator before her job as vice president.

The messaging around health care followed comments Harris made last week that Trump would repeal the Affordable Care Act, something his campaign denied .

That message stayed in Lujan Grisham’s speech on Tuesday night.

“Donald Trump and JD Vance want to dismantle our health care system, repeal the Affordable Care Act and eliminate protections for pre-existing conditions,” she said.

Earlier in the evening, the delegation’s ceremonial roll call featured a DJ playing songs specific for each state. “Confident” by Albuquerque-born singer Demi Lovato played during New Mexico’s roll call.

Lil Jon came out for a surprise performance right before Georgia delegates gave their votes to Harris. He riffed one of his famous lines for the moment. “From the VP to the Walz,” Jon rapped. Indiana brought forward actor Sean Astin, who said his role as a Notre Dame football player in the movie “Rudy” made him an unofficial resident.

Michelle and Barack Obama will close out the night.
