Starbucks to Close Downtown Silver Spring Location on March 30
Starbucks is set to permanently close its location at 915 Ellsworth Drive in Downtown Silver Spring at the end of this month, the Source has confirmed. According to an employee working at the store this morning, the closure is scheduled for noon on March 30 due to “safety concerns.” The Seattle-based coffee chain has closed several locations nationwide since 2022, including Union Station, citing the same reason.

Councilmembers Vote to Loosen Parking Requirements Near Public Transit Stations
The Montgomery County Council voted on a bill Tuesday that would eliminate parking requirements for newly constructed residential developments near public transit stations. The Zoning Text Amendment (PDF) will excuse some developers from meeting the required parking standard. To qualify, developers must build housing within a half-mile of a Metro or Purple Line station, or a quarter-mile from an existing Bus Rapid Transit station.

Police: 17-Year-Old Injured in Long Branch Shooting
A 17-year-old male sustained injuries in a shooting incident on Friday night in the Long Branch neighborhood of Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County Police. An MCPD spokesperson reported that around 11:27 p.m. on Friday, officers were dispatched to the 8500 block of Glenview Ave. following a shooting incident. According to the preliminary investigation, a 17-year-old male victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body by one of two male suspects in the same block. The victim fled to Browning Ave., where he was located by officers and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue personnel and received medical attention.

Teenage Girl Dies in Metro Train Surfing Incident near Silver Spring Station
A teenage girl was tragically killed on Friday morning in what appears to be a “train surfing incident” near the Silver Spring station, according to Metro officials. Metro spokesperson Jordan Pascale reported that at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Metro Transit Police officers responded to a call regarding the discovery of a deceased juvenile female near the Silver Spring Metro station in downtown Silver Spring. Pascale stated that Transit Police believe the fatality may have been a result of train surfing and that investigations are currently ongoing.
